Saint Petersburg State University (SPbU, http://english.spbu.ru/) was founded in 1724. Bachelor, Master and PhD programs of SPbU cover all broad subject areas, there are offered medical doctor programs , programs in arts, undergraduate, graduate and executive education in the globally recognised business school . Many programs are delivered in English or Chinese, academic mobility and exchange programs as well as Russian language training programs are also favourised.

Research priorities of SPbU are Biomedicine and Human Health, Information Systems and Technologies, Nanotechnologies and Materials Science, Social Research and Technologies, Ecology and Biodiversity, Personnel Management and Technologies. During the last seven years 22 new research laboratories in these areas were launched. They are headed by internationally recognised scientists selected on the basis of competitive procedures, among them are Nobel Prize winner C. Pissarides, Fields Award winner S. Smirnov, known specialists in bioinformatics S. O'Brien and P. Pevzner, immunologist Y. Schoenfeld, materials scientist R. Valiev.
